Why patients come to a clinic in Gulshan-e-Iqbal
A leg is made over several visits, and the socket is shaped by hand on a cast of your own stump. Having the clinic and the workshop together means adjustments happen in the same visit, and the clinician who assessed you is the one who fits your leg.
Karachi heat, humidity and the stump
Karachi's humid heat means sweat inside the socket or liner for much of the year. Take the leg or liner off at midday to dry the skin and the liner, keep a spare liner for the hottest months, and tell us if sweat is causing rubbing; a different liner or socket design can help.
Monsoon rain and flooded streets
During the monsoon, streets in many parts of the city flood. Water damages ordinary liners, feet and knees, so keep the leg dry, and consider a waterproof leg if you often get caught in the rain or need to stand for wudu.
Diabetes and amputation in Karachi
Diabetes is the leading cause of leg amputation in Pakistan, and many of our Karachi patients come to us after a diabetic foot wound. A leg after diabetic amputation needs a softer socket, a slower start and daily skin checks; our page on legs after diabetic amputation explains why.
