Shower and water leg
An ordinary artificial leg must stay dry: water damages liners, feet, knees and metal parts. A waterproof leg is built from materials that can get wet, with a non-slip foot, so you can stand for wudu, shower safely, walk on wet bathroom floors or go into the sea.

In short
The short answer
A waterproof leg uses a socket, pylon and foot made to tolerate water: plastic or sealed parts, rust-proof metal, and a foot with a grippy sole that drains. Some are simple shower legs worn only in the bathroom; others are full walking legs you can wear in the rain, at the beach or in a swimming pool. Above the knee, waterproof locking knees are available, and a few high-end knees such as the Ottobock Genium X3 are built to cope with water.
A below knee waterproof leg costs about Rs 90,000 to 300,000; an above knee water leg with a waterproof locking knee about Rs 180,000 to 500,000.

Water-safe parts
Every part is chosen so water can do no harm.
| Part | Waterproof version | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Socket | Plastic or sealed laminate with a drain hole | Water can run out |
| Liner or sleeve | Water-tolerant material, or none | A wet ordinary liner breeds bacteria |
| Pylon and adapters | Stainless steel, titanium or plastic | No rust |
| Foot | Rubber foot with a non-slip sole | Grip on wet tiles |
| Knee (above knee) | Waterproof locking or water-resistant knee | Ordinary knees are damaged by water |

Water soaks into foam covers and foot shells, makes liners a breeding ground for bacteria, rusts steel adapters and damages the oil and seals of hydraulic knees. Electronic knees can be ruined outright. That is why we always say: take an ordinary leg off before water, and keep it dry.
For wudu, many users sit on a stool with the leg off. Others want to stand, several times a day, and a light shower leg makes that safe and saves wear on the main leg. For religious rulings on wudu and ghusl with a prosthesis, ask a scholar you trust; our namaz and wudu guide covers the practical side.

Wet tiles are slippery even with a good foot. Use a non-slip mat, fit a grab rail by the shower, keep a stool within reach and turn slowly. A drain hole in the socket lets water out so the stump does not sit in a puddle. Dry the stump and the leg afterwards.
A water walking leg lets you walk on the sand at Clifton or Seaview, wade into the sea or swim. Rinse it with fresh water after salt water or a chlorinated pool, shake out the sand and let it dry. In the monsoon, a water leg is also handy for flooded streets that would ruin an ordinary leg.
