New socket, same leg

Socket replacement for an artificial leg that no longer fits

Stumps change: they shrink after surgery, and change again with weight, age and health. When the socket stops fitting, you usually do not need a whole new leg. We make a new socket and move your knee, pylon and foot across, as long as they are still in good condition.

In short

What is socket replacement?

The short answer

Socket replacement means making a new socket for your stump and fitting it to the parts of your existing leg. The knee, pylon, adapters and foot are checked, cleaned and moved across if they are still sound, and the leg is aligned again. It is the most common job in the first years after amputation, because the stump keeps shrinking for a year or more.

A replacement socket costs from Rs 40,000 to about Rs 200,000, depending on the design.

Is it right for you?

When it is time for a new socket

Usually a good fit if

  • You need many more sock layers, or the leg feels loose
  • Pain, rubbing or red marks that do not fade
  • Weight gain or loss since the leg was made
  • A cracked or damaged socket

We may advise waiting, or something else, if

  • The knee or foot is also worn out; we price those separately and honestly
  • The stump is still shrinking quickly; a temporary socket may make sense first
  • Only a small adjustment is needed; we will do that instead

Why sockets stop fitting

In the first year after amputation, the stump keeps shrinking as swelling goes down and unused muscle wastes. Later, weight gain or loss, ageing, diabetes and kidney disease all change its size and shape. A socket that fitted perfectly on day one can be loose and rubbing a year later, and that is normal, not a fault.

Signs it is time

  • You need noticeably more sock layers than when the leg was new
  • The stump moves up and down in the socket as you walk
  • Pain at the end of the stump or over a bone
  • Red marks that have not faded twenty minutes after taking the leg off
  • A crack, a creak or a change in how the leg feels

Keeping what still works

The knee and foot are often the most expensive parts of a leg, and they usually outlast the first socket. We check each part, and if it is sound we reuse it, which keeps the cost down. If a foot has flattened or a knee needs servicing, we tell you and price it separately, so you can decide whether to change it now or later.

If you live far from Karachi

Before you travel, send us photos on WhatsApp: the stump on its own, the leg, and how many sock layers you are using. That helps us judge whether a new socket is due and plan the visits so they fit into one stay where possible.

Replacing a socket if you live in another city or country

Tell us your city or country and your travel dates when you call. We plan the visits as close together as the stump allows, so most patients can finish the casting, test socket and fitting in one stay, whether they come from Quetta or fly in from Dubai, with a shorter trip later for adjustments if needed.
