Keeping your leg working

Artificial leg repair, before a small problem becomes a big one

Artificial legs wear: foot shells crack, liners tear, bolts loosen and knees start to click. Most repairs are quick if they are caught early, and a worn part left too long can damage the rest of the leg, or your skin.

In short

What can be repaired on an artificial leg?

The short answer

We check the whole leg: socket, liner, suspension, pylon, adapters, knee, foot and cover. Small repairs, such as tightening bolts or replacing a strap, a sleeve or a foot shell, are often quick. Larger repairs, such as a cracked socket, a worn knee or a broken foot, may need a part to be ordered or a new socket made. You always get the cost before any work starts.

Repair costs range from a few thousand rupees for small parts to the price of a new socket or knee for major work.

When to come in

When your leg needs a repair

Bring the leg in if

  • You hear new clicks, creaks or squeaks
  • The leg feels loose, wobbly or different
  • You see cracks in the socket, foot or pylon
  • The liner, sleeve or cover is torn

Stop using the leg and call if

  • The socket has cracked through
  • The knee gives way unexpectedly
  • A bolt or adapter has come loose and the leg twists
  • The foot or pylon is visibly bent or broken

Warning signs not to ignore

  • A new sound: clicking, creaking or squeaking
  • The leg feels looser, wobbly or turns slightly as you walk
  • Visible cracks, especially near the socket rim or where parts join
  • A foot that feels flat or hard
  • A liner or sleeve that has torn or thinned
  • New rubbing, pain or red marks on the stump

Why early repair saves money

A torn foot shell exposes the foot inside to grit and wear. A loose adapter lets parts rub and crack. A torn liner can damage the skin and the socket. Caught early, each of these is a small, inexpensive fix; left for months, it can mean replacing an expensive foot or knee, or weeks off the leg while the skin heals.

What not to do at home

Please do not turn the alignment screws, glue or tape a cracked socket, wrap wire around loose parts or heat any part to reshape it. Each of these can make the leg unsafe or turn a small repair into a big one. If something feels wrong, stop and call.

If you live far from Karachi

Send us a photo or short video of the problem on WhatsApp, and a voice note of any new sound. That often tells us what is wrong and which parts we may need, so we can order them before you travel and keep your visit short.

Travelling to us?

Getting a repair if you live in another city or country

Tell us your city or country and your travel dates when you call. We plan the visits as close together as the stump allows, so most patients can finish the casting, test socket and fitting in one stay, whether they come from Quetta or fly in from Dubai, with a shorter trip later for adjustments if needed.

Questions

Questions about the artificial leg repair

My leg has started clicking. Is it serious?

Often it is a loose bolt, a dry part or a worn foot shell, which are quick to fix. Sometimes it is a worn knee. Have it checked soon; small problems are cheaper to fix early.

Can a cracked socket be repaired?

A small surface crack can sometimes be repaired. A crack through the socket wall is not safe; stop using the leg and call us, because a new socket is usually needed.

How much does a repair cost?

From a few thousand rupees for small parts and adjustments to the price of a new socket or knee for major work. You always get the cost before we start.

Can I tighten the bolts myself?

Please do not adjust the alignment screws yourself; small changes affect your knee, hip and back. If something feels loose, call us.
