Locking liner system

Pin lock suspension: the leg clicks on and stays on

With pin lock suspension you wear a liner with a short metal pin at the end, step into the socket and hear it click as the pin locks. It is simple, secure and easy to learn, which is why it is one of the most common ways to hold a modern leg on.

In short

How does pin lock suspension work?

The short answer

A pin lock system has two parts: a liner with a threaded pin at its end, and a shuttle lock built into the bottom of the socket. As you push the stump into the socket, the pin enters the lock and clicks into place, step by step. To take the leg off, you press a release button on the side of the socket and draw the stump out. Systems such as the Össur Icelock and Ottobock locks are widely used.

A liner and lock together cost about Rs 35,000 to 200,000, depending mostly on the liner.

Is it right for you?

Who pin lock suspension suits

Usually a good fit if

  • Below knee and above knee users who want a simple, secure fit
  • Users who find straps and cuffs hot or uncomfortable
  • Active users who need the leg to stay put
  • People who want an easy on and off routine

We may advise waiting, or something else, if

  • Very long stumps without room for the lock under the socket
  • A tender stump end; the pin can pull on the end as you swing the leg
  • Weak hands that cannot press the release; a lanyard system may be easier
  • Users who need the firmest possible fit; vacuum may suit better

How pin lock compares with other ways to hold a leg on

Every suspension has a trade-off between cost, comfort and security.

Putting the leg on, step by step

  • Roll on the liner with the pin pointing straight down.
  • Sit or stand and guide the pin into the hole at the bottom of the socket.
  • Push down firmly, or stand and put weight through the leg, until you hear several clicks.
  • Lift the leg slightly to check it is locked before you walk.
  • To take it off, sit down, press the release button and draw the stump out.

The one thing to watch: the stump end

When you swing the leg, its weight hangs from the pin, which pulls on the end of the liner and the end of the stump. Most people never notice. A few, especially with a tender stump end, feel a pulling or see redness on the end. A cushioned liner end, a well-shaped socket or a different suspension usually solves it, so tell us if it happens.

Sitting, namaz and wudu

A pin lock makes it quick to take the leg off for wudu or to sit on the floor: one press of the button and the leg comes off. Make sure the release button is placed where you can reach it easily when sitting, especially if you pray seated or on the floor.

Care of the pin and the lock

Dust and sand are the usual cause of a lock that sticks or will not click. Keep the pin clean, check that it is screwed firmly into the liner, and do not over-tighten it. If the lock jams, do not force it: sit down, press the button fully and draw the stump out gently, then call us so we can clean or service the lock.

Questions

Questions about the pin lock suspension

How does a pin lock leg stay on?

A pin at the end of your liner clicks into a lock at the bottom of the socket. It stays locked until you press the release button.

Is pin lock or vacuum better?

Pin lock is simpler and costs less; vacuum gives a firmer fit with less movement. For most users a pin lock works very well. Very active users, or those with stump-end problems, may prefer vacuum.

What if the lock gets stuck?

Do not force it. Sit down, press the button fully and draw the stump out gently. If it still sticks, dust or sand may be inside; call us and we will clean or repair it.

How much does a pin lock system cost?

About Rs 35,000 to 200,000 for the liner and lock together, depending mostly on the liner.
