Solid ankle, cushion heel

SACH prosthetic foot, simple, tough and affordable

SACH stands for solid ankle, cushion heel: a solid foot with a soft heel wedge and no moving parts. It is the most affordable foot, very hard-wearing and easy to replace, and for many first legs and low-activity users it is all that is needed.

In short

What is a SACH foot?

The short answer

A SACH foot has a rigid inner keel, a foam body shaped like a foot and a softer wedge in the heel. When you land, the heel compresses a little to cushion the step; as you roll forward, the foam front bends at the toes. There are no hinges or springs to break, so it copes well with dust, rain and hard daily use, and it can be replaced quickly when it wears.

Below knee legs with a SACH foot are our local build, from Rs 80,000 to about Rs 150,000.

Who a SACH foot suits

Usually a good fit if

  • First legs and families on a tight budget
  • Low to moderate activity: home and neighbourhood walking
  • Users who want something tough with nothing to break
  • Children and older users who need simplicity

We may advise waiting, or something else, if

  • Very active users who walk long distances; a dynamic or carbon foot saves effort
  • Frequent uneven ground or slopes; a multiaxial foot adapts better
  • Users who want a springy push-off

What is inside a SACH foot

The keel inside is a rigid piece, often wood or hard plastic, bolted to the pylon. Around it, the foot is moulded from foam in the shape of a real foot, with a softer wedge in the heel. Heel wedges come in soft, medium and firm, chosen for your body weight: too soft and you sink back on landing, too firm and every step jars the stump.

Why simple can be the right choice

A SACH foot lets you put the money into the part that decides comfort: a well-fitted socket. It suits first legs, when the stump is still changing and the socket will be replaced anyway, and it suits users who walk mostly at home and around the neighbourhood. It is easy to repair or replace in any city, which matters for families far from Karachi.

The limits of a SACH foot

Because the ankle does not move, a SACH foot is stiff on slopes and gives little push-off, so long walks take more effort. On uneven lanes and broken pavements, the foot does not adapt to the surface. If your activity grows, a multiaxial or carbon fibre foot can be fitted to the same leg later.

SACH or Jaipur Foot?

The Jaipur Foot is a rubber foot developed in India and widely used across South Asia. It is designed for barefoot walking, squatting and sitting cross-legged, which some families value for home and the mosque. A SACH foot is usually used with shoes and gives a more even step in footwear. We fit both and can explain which suits your daily life better; see our notes on the brands we fit.

Questions

Questions about the sach prosthetic foot

What does SACH stand for?

Solid ankle, cushion heel. The ankle does not move; a soft heel wedge cushions each step.

Is a SACH foot good enough?

For many first legs and users who walk mainly at home and around the neighbourhood, yes. It is tough, simple and inexpensive. Very active users usually do better with a dynamic or carbon fibre foot.

How long does a SACH foot last?

Often several years. The foam wears at the toe and heel over time, and the foot can be replaced quickly and cheaply.

Can I walk barefoot with a SACH foot?

Short steps at home in socks are fine. For walking barefoot in the house or the mosque, some users prefer a Jaipur Foot, which is designed for it.
