Manual locking knee

Locking knee joint, the safest start above the knee

A locking knee stays straight and solid while you walk, and bends only when you pull a lever or cord to sit down. It cannot give way under you, which makes it the safest knee for first legs, older users and anyone with weak hips or poor balance.

In short

What is a locking knee?

The short answer

A locking knee has a latch that holds the knee fully straight. You walk with a straight artificial leg, lifting the hip slightly or swinging the leg a little to the side so the foot clears the ground. To sit, you pull a lever or cord to release the latch and the knee bends. When you stand up, it locks straight again. It is the simplest and safest knee we fit.

A complete above knee leg with a locking knee starts at Rs 150,000, our lowest price for an above knee leg.

Who a locking knee suits

Usually a good fit if

  • First above knee legs and new users building confidence
  • Older users and anyone with weak hips or poor balance
  • Users who mainly stand, transfer and walk short distances
  • Hip level legs, where stability matters most

We may advise waiting, or something else, if

  • Active walkers who want a natural, faster walk
  • Users who walk long distances; a stiff leg tires you more
  • Anyone who can safely control a polycentric or hydraulic knee

Day to day

Sitting down and standing up safely

  • Stand close to the chair, with the back of your legs touching it.
  • Pull the lever or cord to unlock the knee.
  • Hold the armrests and lower yourself slowly.
  • To stand, push up with your arms and sound leg until you are fully upright.
  • Listen or feel for the click before you take a step.

Walking with a straight leg

Because the knee does not bend, the leg has to clear the ground another way. Most users lift the hip a little or swing the leg slightly outwards. We often set the artificial leg a touch shorter than the other leg to make this easier, and a light shoe on the artificial side helps too. Training teaches you to do it smoothly.

Who should start with one

We usually suggest a locking knee for older users, anyone with weak hips or poor balance, people after a hip level amputation, and first-time users who are anxious about falling. Standing safely for namaz, transfers and short walks at home is a real achievement, and a locking knee makes it possible for many people who could not manage another knee.

Moving on from a locking knee

Some users stay with a locking knee for good. Others build strength and confidence and move to a polycentric or hydraulic knee. Some knees combine both: they can be used free-swinging, with a lock for long standing or uneven ground. We review this at follow-ups.

Questions

Questions about the locking knee joint

Is a locking knee safe for an elderly person?

It is the safest knee we fit, because it cannot buckle while you walk. That is why we usually choose it for older users and anyone with weak hips or poor balance.

Will I walk stiff-legged with a locking knee?

Yes. The knee stays straight while walking, so you lift the hip slightly or swing the leg out a little. We often set the leg a touch shorter to help the toe clear the ground.

How do I sit down with a locking knee?

Stand close to the chair, pull the lever or cord to unlock, and lower yourself while holding the armrests. When you stand, the knee locks again; check for the click before walking.

How much does a leg with a locking knee cost?

From Rs 150,000 for a local build, up to about Rs 350,000 with a silicone liner and an imported foot.
