Temporary artificial leg, to stand and walk while the stump settles

The stump keeps changing shape for months after surgery, so a first, simpler leg often makes more sense than waiting. A temporary leg gets you standing and walking early, keeps your muscles and balance working, and helps shape the stump for the final leg.

In short

What is a temporary artificial leg?

The short answer

A temporary (interim) leg is a simple, adjustable leg fitted as soon as the wound has healed, before the stump has finished shrinking. Its socket is made to be adjusted with socks and pads as the stump gets smaller. After a few months, when the stump has settled, a final socket is made, and the foot, the pylon and often the knee are moved across to the final leg.

Below the knee, a temporary leg costs about Rs 70,000 to 150,000; above the knee, about Rs 130,000 to 250,000.

Is it right for you?

When a temporary leg makes sense

Usually a good fit if

  • The wound has healed but the stump is still shrinking
  • You want to stand and walk sooner rather than later
  • First-time users who want to learn before choosing final parts
  • Patients who will travel home and come back for the final leg

We may advise waiting, or something else, if

  • The wound is not fully closed
  • Swelling that changes a great deal from day to day; shrinker socks come first
  • The stump has already settled; a final leg makes more sense

Temporary and final

How a temporary leg differs from the final leg

Most of what you pay for in a temporary leg moves across to the final one.

What a temporary leg costs

Because the foot and pylon are usually reused, the final leg often costs much less than a second complete leg.

Why not just wait for the final leg?

Months without standing weaken the muscles, stiffen the hip and knee, and knock balance and confidence. Standing and walking early with a temporary leg keeps the body working, and wearing the socket helps shrink and shape the stump, which makes the final socket fit better.

Living with a shrinking stump

The stump is usually bigger in the morning and smaller by evening, and it keeps shrinking over the weeks. You manage this with prosthetic socks: add a layer when the leg feels loose, remove one when it feels tight. Signs that the socket is too loose include the stump sinking too deep, the leg slipping up and down as you walk, or redness on the very end of the stump. Call us when you need more than a few layers; we add pads or adjust the socket.

When to make the final leg

When the number of socks you need stops changing for a few weeks, usually three to six months after surgery, the stump has settled enough for a final socket. We cast again, make a test socket, and move the foot, pylon and often the knee across to the final leg.

For patients from other cities and abroad

A temporary leg works well if you live far from Karachi. You can go home walking, manage the shrinking stump with socks, send us photos on WhatsApp if anything changes, and come back for the final socket a few months later.

Travelling to us?

Using a temporary leg if you live in another city or country

Tell us your city or country and your travel dates when you call. We plan the visits as close together as the stump allows, so most patients can finish the casting, test socket and fitting in one stay, whether they come from Quetta or fly in from Dubai, with a shorter trip later for adjustments if needed.

Questions

Questions about the temporary artificial leg

Do I really need a temporary leg?

Not always. If your stump has already settled, we go straight to the final leg. A temporary leg makes sense when you want to stand early while the stump is still shrinking.

How long will I wear the temporary leg?

Usually a few months, until the number of socks you need stops changing. Then we make the final socket.

Is a temporary leg a waste of money?

Usually not, because the foot, the pylon and sometimes the knee are moved across to the final leg. You pay mainly for the extra socket, and you gain months of standing and walking.

Can I go home with a temporary leg and come back later?

Yes. It suits patients from other cities and from abroad well: you go home walking, manage the fit with socks, and return for the final socket a few months later.
