Computer-controlled knee

Microprocessor knee, for above knee users who walk a lot

A microprocessor knee reads your walking many times a second and adjusts its resistance, so it can catch a stumble, handle slopes and let you walk down stairs step over step. It is the most advanced knee we fit and the most expensive, so we start by asking whether it will really change your life.

In short

What is a microprocessor knee?

The short answer

It is an above knee prosthetic knee with sensors and a small computer that control a hydraulic unit. As you walk, it measures the knee angle, the load and the speed, and changes the resistance in real time, so the knee bends smoothly when you swing it and stays firm when you put weight on it. Well-known models include the Ottobock C-Leg and Genium, the Össur Rheo Knee, the Blatchford Orion and the Proteor Plié.

On its own, a microprocessor knee usually costs more than Rs 2,500,000. The exact figure depends on the model and the exchange rate when it is imported.

Is it right for you?

Who a microprocessor knee suits

Usually a good fit if

  • Above knee or through-knee users who walk outdoors every day
  • People who fall or stumble with their current knee
  • Users who walk on slopes, uneven ground and stairs
  • Someone who will charge it daily and keep up with servicing

We may advise waiting, or something else, if

  • You walk mostly indoors; a stable mechanical knee serves as well
  • The socket does not fit well yet; that comes first
  • Body weight or activity outside the knee limits
  • The cost would stop you replacing sockets later; a hydraulic knee may be wiser

Your visits

From first conversation to confident walking

  1. Assessment

Your walking, falls, goals and current leg, and whether the socket is ready.

  2. Decision

A written estimate and an honest comparison with a hydraulic knee.

  3. Ordering

The knee is imported to order once you agree.

  4. Fitting and setup

The knee is programmed to your walking.

  5. Training

Learning to trust the knee on slopes, stairs and when sitting.

Import takes time after ordering; we tell you the expected timeline when you decide, so visitors from abroad can plan their trip.

How a microprocessor knee helps

Stumble recovery. If the toe catches and the knee starts to bend unexpectedly, the knee senses it and stiffens, giving you a moment to recover instead of falling.

Slopes and stairs. The knee can yield slowly under load, so you can walk down a slope or a staircase step over step, as you did before the amputation.

Sitting and speed. It lowers you gently into a chair and keeps up whether you walk slowly through a crowded bazaar or briskly to catch a train.

Less thinking. Many users say the biggest change is mental: they stop concentrating on every step.

Who benefits most, honestly

The users who gain most walk outdoors every day, on uneven streets, slopes and stairs, often for long workdays, and many have had falls on a mechanical knee. Someone who walks mostly at home, on flat floors, usually gains little over a good hydraulic or polycentric knee, and the money is better spent on a well-fitted socket and its future replacements.

Living with it in Pakistan

Charging. Most knees are charged overnight, like a phone, and a full charge usually lasts a day or more depending on the model. With load-shedding, charge when power is available or keep the charger on a UPS.

Water, dust and heat. Many models are not waterproof. Keep the knee dry, away from dust, and do not leave it in a hot car.

Servicing. Manufacturers set service intervals, and the knee may need to go back for servicing. We explain the schedule for your model before you decide.

Is it worth the price?

For the right user, a microprocessor knee can mean fewer falls, more confidence and a fuller working life. For others, it is an expensive knee that does little a hydraulic knee would not. We put both options side by side in writing, including the cost of future sockets, so the decision is yours and well informed. We are independent of every manufacturer, so the advice is about you, not a brand.

Tell us your city or country and your travel dates when you call. We plan the visits as close together as the stump allows, so most patients can finish the casting, test socket and fitting in one stay, whether they come from Quetta or fly in from Dubai, with a shorter trip later for adjustments if needed.

Questions

Questions about the microprocessor knee prosthesis

How much does a microprocessor knee cost in Pakistan?

On its own it usually costs more than Rs 2,500,000, depending on the model and the exchange rate when it is imported. We give the exact figure in writing after the assessment.

Which is better, the C-Leg or the Rheo Knee?

Both are excellent and widely used. The right choice depends on your walking, your weight, servicing and the price at the time. We are independent of every manufacturer, so we recommend the knee that suits you, not a brand.

What happens if the battery runs out?

Most microprocessor knees switch to a safe default resistance when the battery is flat, so you can still walk carefully. Charging every night, like a phone, avoids it.

Do microprocessor knees need servicing?

Yes. Manufacturers set service intervals, and the knee may need to go back for servicing. We explain the schedule for your model before you decide.

Can I try a microprocessor knee before buying?

Ask us at the assessment. Where a trial is possible we arrange it; otherwise we explain clearly what the knee will and will not do for you.
