Preparing for the leg

Stump care and shrinkers, to get ready for your first leg

What you do in the weeks after amputation decides how soon you get a leg and how well it fits. Controlling swelling with a shrinker sock, keeping the hip and knee moving, and caring for the skin all prepare the stump for the first socket.

In short

What is stump care before a prosthesis?

The short answer

A shrinker is an elastic sock shaped like the stump that gently squeezes it, helping swelling go down and giving the stump a firm, even shape for the socket. Alongside it come exercises that keep the hip and knee straight and strong, gentle work to make the skin less sensitive, and careful daily checks of the wound and scar. Some patients use elastic bandage wrapping instead, but it is easy to get wrong, so a well-fitted shrinker is usually simpler.

Shrinker socks cost about Rs 2,000 to 15,000 depending on the type.

Who it is for

Who should start stump care

Start stump care if

  • You have had an amputation and are waiting for a leg
  • The stump is swollen, soft or uneven
  • The hip or knee is getting stiff
  • You are travelling far and want to arrive ready

Check with your surgeon first if

  • The wound is still open or stitches are in place; your surgeon decides when compression starts
  • There are signs of infection: redness, heat, discharge or fever
  • Circulation is poor; compression must be gentle

Why controlling swelling matters

After surgery, the stump is swollen. A socket made on a swollen stump soon becomes loose as the swelling goes, so the leg has to wait, or the socket has to be replaced early. Steady, even compression brings the swelling down faster and shapes the stump into a smooth, firm cylinder or cone that a socket can hold comfortably.

Wearing a shrinker correctly

  • Pull it on smoothly with no wrinkles, especially at the end of the stump.
  • It should feel snug, never tight at the top like a band; that traps swelling below it.
  • Wear it most of the day and night, taking it off to wash the stump and the sock.
  • Keep two, so one can be washed while you wear the other.
  • As the stump shrinks, a smaller size is needed.

Exercises that prevent stiffness

The most common problem after amputation is a hip or knee that stiffens in a bent position, which makes walking with a leg much harder. Lie on your front for a while every day, keep the knee straight when sitting after a below knee amputation, and never put a pillow under the knee or between the legs. Simple strengthening exercises for the hip and thigh keep the muscles ready for walking.

Skin, scar and sensitivity

Once the wound has fully healed, gentle massage of the scar keeps it from sticking to the tissue beneath. Lightly tapping and rubbing the stump with a soft cloth helps it become less sensitive, so the first socket feels less strange. Check the skin every day, keep it clean and dry, and call your surgeon about any redness, heat or discharge.

Phantom sensations

Many people feel the missing leg as if it were still there, sometimes with tingling, itching or pain. This is normal and often eases with time and with wearing a leg. Our guide to phantom limb pain explains what helps.

Travelling to us?

Tell us your city or country and your travel dates when you call. Questions

Questions about the stump care and shrinkers

When can I start using a shrinker?

When your surgeon says the wound can take compression, often once the stitches or staples are out. Ask your surgeon first.

How long should I wear a shrinker each day?

Most of the day and night, taking it off to wash the stump and the sock. Keep a second shrinker to change into.

Can I put a pillow under my knee?

No. A pillow under the knee or between the legs encourages the joint to stiffen in a bent position, which makes walking with a leg harder. Keep the leg straight.

How much does a shrinker cost?

About Rs 2,000 to 15,000, depending on the type and size.
