Cushioned second skin

Silicone liner, a cushioned second skin for your stump

A liner is a soft sleeve of silicone or gel that you roll onto the stump before putting on the leg. It grips the skin, spreads pressure, cuts down rubbing and, with a pin or a seal, holds the leg on. For most active users it is the single biggest comfort upgrade.

In short

What is a prosthetic liner?

The short answer

Liners are made of silicone, polyurethane gel or thermoplastic elastomer, often with a fabric outer cover. You turn the liner inside out, place it against the end of the stump and roll it up, so it sits against the skin without air pockets. It cushions bony areas, reduces shear (the skin being dragged inside the socket) and gives the socket something to grip. Well-known liners include the Össur Iceross range and Ottobock liners, and we also fit good value gel liners.

A liner costs from about Rs 15,000 for a basic gel liner to Rs 150,000 for a premium imported silicone or seal-in liner.

Who a liner helps most

Usually a good fit if

  • Active users who walk for hours
  • Bony, scarred or grafted stumps
  • Users with rubbing, blisters or skin breakdown in socks
  • Anyone moving to pin lock or vacuum suspension

We may advise waiting, or something else, if

  • Users who cannot wash and dry the liner every day
  • Allergy to the liner material; we test first
  • Open areas on the skin; these must heal first
  • Very weak hands can find rolling on hard; we teach easier methods

How a liner protects the skin

When you walk in a hard socket with socks, the skin is dragged a little with every step. That shear, more than pressure, is what causes blisters and sores. A liner grips the skin and moves with it, so the movement happens between the liner and the socket instead. The gel or silicone also spreads load away from bony points and fills small hollows in the stump.

Putting it on correctly

  • Turn the liner fully inside out.
  • Place the end of the liner flat against the end of the stump, with no air between.
  • Roll it up the stump smoothly, without pulling or stretching.
  • Check there are no wrinkles or trapped air; a pin liner must point straight down.
  • Use a mirror to check the back of the stump until it becomes habit.

Liners in a Pakistani summer

In the heat, the stump sweats inside the liner, and a sweaty liner can slip and irritate the skin. Take the liner off at midday, dry the skin and the liner with a clean towel, and put it back on. Many users keep a second liner to swap in during the hottest months. If heavy sweating is a constant problem, tell us; a different liner or socket design can help.

Washing and replacing

Wash the inside of the liner every day with mild, unperfumed soap and water, rinse well and dry it inside out on a liner stand or a bottle, away from direct sun. Wash the stump too. Replace the liner when it tears, becomes thin or loose, or still smells after washing. A worn liner can undo a good socket.

Questions

Questions about the silicone liner

Do I need a silicone liner?

Not always. Many users do well with socks and a soft insert. A liner helps most for active users, bony or scarred stumps and anyone with rubbing or blisters.

How much does a silicone liner cost in Pakistan?

From about Rs 15,000 for a basic gel liner to Rs 150,000 for a premium imported silicone or seal-in liner.

How long does a liner last?

About a year with daily use, sometimes longer. Replace it when it tears, becomes thin or loose, or keeps smelling after washing.

My stump sweats a lot in the liner. What can I do?

Take the liner off at midday to dry the skin and the liner, keep a spare to swap in, and tell us. Heavy sweating can sometimes be helped with a different liner or socket design.
