When to go back
Go back when you can put the leg on reliably, walk steadily for the distances your work needs, and wear the leg for a full working day without skin problems. For many below knee users with desk jobs, that is a few weeks after the fitting; for physical work and above knee users, it usually takes longer. A gradual return, with shorter days at first, works well.
Desk and office jobs
Sitting for long periods can make the socket uncomfortable at the back of the knee or thigh. Stand and walk a little every hour, keep a spare sock layer at work, and choose a chair that lets you sit with the leg comfortable. Tell a colleague you trust what to do if the leg causes a problem.

Standing and physical work
Shop work, factory work and jobs on your feet put more load on the stump and the leg. A well-fitted socket, a good liner and a durable, cushioned foot matter more here; for very active work, a carbon fibre foot can reduce tiredness. Tell us about lifting, ladders, heat and wet floors at your work.
Getting to work
Many below knee users ride a motorbike again once they are confident on the leg; start in quiet streets, wear protective gear and make sure you can put both feet down safely. Above the knee, riding is harder; talk to us first. In a car, right-leg amputees usually manage an automatic car with a left-foot accelerator or hand controls fitted; check the licensing rules before driving. Rickshaws and ride-hailing apps are good options in the early weeks.
Talking to your employer
Most employers want to help valued staff come back. Explain what you can do, any temporary limits, and simple adjustments such as a chair at your counter, a ground-floor workstation or time for follow-up appointments. If your amputation followed an accident at work, ask whether they will contribute to the leg; we can provide an itemised written estimate.
The disability certificate and job quotas
Government jobs include a quota for persons with disabilities, and applying for them usually requires a disability certificate and the special CNIC. Our guide to the disability certificate and CNIC explains the process in Sindh and Balochistan.
